Infarm's Valuation Tops $1 Billion

Dutch vertical farming company, Infarm is valued over $1 Billion after it latest private equity raise in late December, 2021. "It is the first vertical farming start-up in Europe to pass the $1 billion unicorn milestone."

Infarm houses its growing operations in 110,000 square food indoor grow farms. Currently, the company is growing 75 different varieties of herbs and leafy greens. The company also operates in-store growing centers. To date the company has 17 large grow centers and over 1,400 in-store grow locations.

Unlike conventional farming, Infarm’s vertical farms use zero pesticides. The company also recycles water and nutrients and uses the evaporated water of the plants. As a result, they use 95% less land and 95% less water than soil-based agriculture, the company claims. The indoor farms are smart with embedded sensors used to collect vast quantities of data on everything from temperature and humidity to soil nutrient levels and crop growth rates. Infarm is planning to open a growing center in Qatar, which has to import the majority of its food due to its climate, in 2023. .

Infarm wants to grow the entire fruit and vegetable basket and sell premium food at affordable prices.
